ABOUT THE AUTHOR
The Story of the Can’t That Could was written in the 1960’s for me and my six siblings by our mother, Joan C. Yingling. It was one of several poems she wrote while we were growing up.
When mom and dad downsized and moved from the house where we grew up, I happily took possession of the raggedy folder the poems occupied. For decades, I often thought of having mom’s work published but I had not a clue how to go about it. I got busy raising my own family and running a small business and so they remained in that folder for a few more decades.
Late in the summer of 2018, at a family gathering, I discovered that my siblings all but forgot our mom wrote poems. And sadly, the grand kids and great grand kids weren’t familiar with her poems at all. It made me so sad to think her creative stories would soon be lost forever if we didn’t find a way to preserve them.
A few days after that gathering, our daughter Jess, called and said, “Mom, I know you’ve always wanted to publish grandma’s poems. Have you ever thought how each one would make a great children’s book?” What a brilliant idea! And so, my daughter gave me the gift of finally knowing how to give my mom the gift of having her work published.
The Story of The Can’t That Could is the first in a series we will be sharing. It had been the family favorite and I hope it will become yours as well.
